We have been ridiculously busy so far this summer. It has been a really good time! Here’s what we have been up to, if you would like to see:
Over Memorial Day, DJ’s parents and sister came to spend the weekend with us. We went out to dinner in Point Pleasant on Friday. Saturday we hung out around the house, smoked ribs, had a fire, and celebrated Mom’s birthday! That Monday we had a couple of friends over for brunch. I made french toast casserole, mimosas and lots of other food.
The next Saturday, we went to Longwood Garden’s Wine and Jazz festival with DJ’s sister! It was so awesome, especially getting to check out all the exhibits when they were nearly empty, since everyone was outside drinking wine. After the festival, Stephanie treated us to a delicious Mexican dinner at Dos Gringos in Media. Then we headed to Manayunk to celebrate a friend’s birthday. Fun day, late night! We also worked on our garden on Sunday, since we realized that morning that critters had eaten some of our veggies!
Our good friend Kyle’s birthday was the next week, complete with a cake ordered all the way from Wyoming and 2nd annual birthday nachos. That Saturday, we had company over for dinner, then went to Asbury Park to continue our celebration. (Thanks to Ross of All About the Journey for the Asbury boardwalk picture!)
This past weekend, we took my sister out to Atlantic City’s beach and food truck festival on Saturday. On Sunday, we had our friend John over to check out Beach Haus Brewery and Belmar’s beach, then we came back to the house for pulled pork dinner.
When we were having company over after a long busy week at the office, I used to get stressed out. How will we get our house in order, catch up on chores, and manage to be a good host when we already don’t have any extra time? Luckily, everything always comes together much easier than I expect. The last four weeks, we have had company over four times!
DJ and I follow 3 easy steps to get ready to entertain guests at home:
- Straighten up – Early in the week, we start to straighten up gradually. Getting rid of whatever clutter we have sitting around doesn’t take too much time throughout the week. When we are nearing the and of the week, we will make a final sweep over the house to make sure everything is looking good and note anything we need to stock up on.
- Clean/Errands – Next, one of us goes out shopping to get food, drinks and whatever else is needed for having company over. Whoever doesn’t go shopping stays home and cleans up.
- Prep – I like to have everything possible prepped before my guests come over, so I always choose to serve meals that can be made ahead of time. I chop veggies, make desserts and side dishes, marinate meat, set the table and bar, pull out blankets and pillows if anyone is staying over, do all of the prep I can the morning before. That way the only thing left to do is enjoy everyone’s company! What do you do to get ready for company? Any quick tips?
This weekend, DJ and I are decidedly not doing anything! Just hanging out around the house, doing some grilling and weeding. We’re looking forward to spending 4th of July weekend in Pitman with our families, taking Kyle with us on a road trip to Asheville North Carolina, and enjoying lots of time at the beach this July. The rest of the summer, we are hoping to do some more stand-up paddleboarding, continue decluttering the house to eventually have a yard sale, and possibly participate in another Whole30.
Coming up on Thrive or Survive, we are working on a site and logo redesign, a post with some simple ideas for celebrating July 4th, and a post on packing for our road trip! Keep in touch by subscribing to our email updates on the sidebar!
