Can’t believe September is half way over already! DJ and I have been so busy with work and the Whole30 that I have had hardly any time to post. But we are really looking forward to this fall. Here’s what we have been up to and what we’re looking forward to:
As I have posted previously, we are participating in the Whole30. We are officially half way through! The past fifteen days have gone really well, and both DJ and I are having way less cravings than we expected. The one thing I can’t wait to have when the Whole30 is over – cream in my coffee! I have been using coconut milk, but it is just not the same. DJ and I have both been feeling great with our healthy choices and have even done some traveling, which wasn’t as difficult as expected. Last time we attempted the Whole30, we stayed at home and didn’t really do anything. This Whole30 has been eons better than last time, I think mostly due to our planning and preparation.
Even though the weather isn’t quite cooperating yet, we took some fall decorations out of the attic already. I love creatively decorating my house along with the seasons. I upgraded the felt leaves on our door from the dollar store with some dark green spray paint to add a little more interest. It was super easy. I also put up the sunflower wreath I made a couple years ago, and I found some leftover scraps to throw in a pitcher in the bathroom. We also had an open spot on our bar cart, which was the perfect spot for last year’s Thanksgiving centerpiece. So we are all set to welcome fall! All we need are some mums out front, and a pumpkin or two.
Fall Beer Fest
When DJ & I were first living on our own, we hosted a fall beer tasting event that everyone seemed to really like – we invited five beer enthusiast friends over with instructions to bring a seasonal 6-pack to share. After swapping beers, everyone had 6 different beers to try. It was pretty chilly out, so we had a big bonfire and some snacks to enjoy. This year we are throwing the same sort of event, but with more food, more beer, and more wine. Planning on putting up some lights around the backyard so it is a little easier to see, and hoping for good weather. We are excited to host and hang out with our friends and family!
Fall Closet Update

One of my goals in launching Thrive or Survive was to reduce the amount of possessions and expenses we have weighing us down. In order to do that, I cleaned out our closet and put a lot of thought into how fashion serves us. I decided that rather than going shopping often, DJ & I would try to wear our existing clothes as long as possible, and focus on good quality timeless pieces when we do need to add to our wardrobe. Rather than going all out on fall shopping, I just have a couple worn-out items in mind to upgrade. There are also a couple of trends I’m a little interested in exploring with pieces that I already have in my closet.
We are super excited to go to Longwood Garden’s Nightscape exhibit again this year! Longwood is awesome all year round, but this light and sound exhibit is a whole new experience. Last year was a blast, so this year we invited some friends to meet us there. Instead of leaving for dinner or having cafeteria food, I’m packing a picnic dinner for everyone to enjoy. Should be a great time!
This is going to be our third year hosting Thanksgiving! This time is extra exciting because my family and DJ’s family are both coming. I had the bad luck of catching a nasty sinus infection just before last Thanksgiving, so I am going to have to take lots of Vitamin C and wash my hands a ton this year. I lost my voice by the end of it all, but at least I wasn’t contagious! Since we are having more people at our house than prior years and also don’t have any travel plans this fall, both DJ & I are planning to take off work the week of.
What Fall traditions and plans are you looking forward to?
