Looking Back on 2016 and Forward to 2017

Our 2016 flew by, especially the past couple months of holidays. DJ and I learned a lot both about ourselves and the world around us this year. Launching Thrive or Survive was my # 1 accomplishment this year. Blogging has been a dream of mine for a long time, but was something I was never brave enough to follow through on. I’m thankful for the community I have built so far, and hope to offer more to them this coming year.

Here are some of our highlights from this past year:

One of my favorite memories was our sweet anniversary trip to West Palm Beach. We relaxed, hung out at the beach, and went stand up paddleboarding for the first time!

We went to New Hope with my sister in law and her roommate for her and my birthday celebration. Had a great time at Peddler’s Village, walked over to Lambertville, had dinner at Triumph and hung out for the awesome band they had playing. Fast forward to summer, we loved the Longwood Wine and Jazz festival. Planted an awesome garden. Celebrated my mother in law’s birthday Memorial day weekend. Spent Fourth of July weekend in Pitman and checked out their new brewery! Took our friend Kyle with us to check out Asheville. Enjoyed a Jimmy Buffet and G. Love beach concert in AC. Completed our first Whole30.

Summer went by so quickly, and so did fall and winter. We hardly had time for anything but holidays. Halloween (as The Dude and Maude Lebowski from The Big Lebowski), DJ’s birthday, Thanksgiving and Christmas were all great. Maybe next year we will find more ways to slow it down a little more.

2017

We have high hopes for the next year – resolutions aren’t really our style, but we always discuss our goals together and reflect on the year that’s passed. Our focus for 2017 is on improving our health and finances. It’s another busy year coming up, and we can already tell that it will be a challenge to keep our priorities in mind. We’re starting up another Whole30 this month, and I’m excited to read Whole30 founder Melissa Hartwig’s Food Freedom Forever and develop some more healthy habits. We’re also setting a goal to incorporate more exercise into our lives, without rejoining a gym. We want to get active at least two times a week, and get outside as much as we can. DJ and I are also going to be participating in our first No-Spend month in March, after being so inspired by Cait Flanders’ journey. We have another few ideas that we are excited to share, all focused on making saving feel more rewarding and more possible within our busy lives.

We’re excited to be celebrating our tenth anniversary together, and hosting a big party at our house this summer. When we got married, we couldn’t afford a reception and promised ourselves that we would host an anniversary party instead. Exciting that we are at a place now that we can afford to celebrate with friends and family! I have a lot of planning ahead of me, but also a lot more experience hosting than I did when I got married.

I’ll be turning 25 this spring, and even though life looks different than I would have expected, I’m truly happy. I’m excited to be learning much more about blogging, continuing to define the Thrive or Survive brand, and reaching more people in the new year.

Best wishes for a warm and bright 2017,
